Elderly carer in Madrid

Elderly carers for families in Madrid

In Madrid, the search for a carer usually starts with one specific change: a fall, coming home after a hospital stay, or a memory that no longer allows a parent to spend the day alone. We select elderly carers so that the person can stay in their own home and their own neighbourhood, with the help their level of dependency calls for.

The right arrangement depends on that level and on the home: a few morning hours for washing and a walk, a live-out carer from Monday to Friday, a live-in carer with weekend cover, or a carer just for the nights. Madrid also mixes period flats in the centre with detached houses over several floors in the north-west, and each calls for a different profile.

We have been placing staff in Madrid homes since 2009, and we select carers the same way: an in-depth interview built on real cases and references checked with previous families. You receive the first profiles in under 3 hours and pay nothing until you hire.

At home or in a care home

A carer at home or a care home?

Two ways of caring, neither better in itself. This is how they compare, point by point.

If in doubt, start with what can be undone: a carer by the hour or live-out lets you see what your relative needs before deciding. If they already need someone living with them, read how a live-in carer works.

Dependency in Madrid

The Dependency Act in the Madrid region

In Madrid, the level of dependency is assessed and decided by the regional government, the Comunidad de Madrid: the person or their representative applies, and the decision sets the level and the services or benefits that apply, valid throughout Spain (Law 39/2006, arts. 27 and 28).

Those services are provided through the region's social services network, by public or contracted accredited centres and services (art. 14). A carer hired by the family does not replace them: she can work alongside telecare or a day centre, cover the hours they leave uncovered, or be the main help while the assessment is processed.

Areas we cover

In the centre — Salamanca, Chamberí, Retiro, Chamartín or Argüelles — many older people live in period flats, with steps at the entrance and narrow lifts. There it matters that the carer can handle transfers in tight spaces and go out with a wheelchair or walking frame, so the usual walks, market trips and pharmacy visits carry on.

In the north and north-west — Pozuelo de Alarcón, Aravaca, Majadahonda, Las Rozas, Boadilla del Monte, Torrelodones or La Moraleja — detached houses over several floors are common. It pays to plan a room for a live-in carer and, if the person can no longer manage stairs, a ground-floor bedroom; and because distances are longer, we look for carers who drive when there are medical appointments.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an elderly carer cost in Madrid?

Madrid has the same minimums as the rest of Spain: by the hour, from €9.55 per hour worked, and full time, from €1,424.50 a month over 12 payments. A live-in carer earns between €1,500 and €2,500 gross a month over 12 payments; with the family's Social Security contribution, the total comes to between about €1,835 and €3,060 a month. What moves the figure is the level of dependency, nights and the experience the case requires.

Do I need a dependency assessment before hiring a carer in Madrid?

No. You can hire her from day one and apply to the Comunidad de Madrid for the assessment at the same time; when the decision arrives, we advise on how the services or benefits granted fit with the carer. Meanwhile, we plan the care around what your relative needs each day.

Which parts of Madrid do you cover?

The whole city, from Salamanca, Chamberí, Retiro or Chamartín to Moncloa-Aravaca, and the towns of the region: Pozuelo de Alarcón, Majadahonda, Las Rozas, Boadilla del Monte, Torrelodones, Alcobendas and La Moraleja, among others. Interviews are held remotely and the 2 trial days take place in your relative's home.

Can the carer take my relative to medical appointments?

Yes. Going with them to the health centre or the hospital, collecting their medicines from the pharmacy and helping them take the medication the doctor prescribes are part of her job. If your relative uses a wheelchair or the appointments are far away, we take it into account when choosing the profile, for example a carer who drives.

What should we prepare at home before a live-in carer arrives?

A room of her own in decent conditions and, if your relative can no longer manage stairs, an accessible ground-floor bedroom, especially in multi-storey houses in Pozuelo, Majadahonda or Las Rozas. In central flats, check the bathroom and whether a wheelchair can get through; we go over it with you before the trial.

How quickly do you present carers in Madrid?

The first profiles, for a flat in Chamberí or a house in Majadahonda, arrive in under 3 hours; for a very specific profile, up to 48 hours.

What guarantee comes with a hire in Madrid?

In Madrid, a free replacement within the first 6 months if the carer leaves or does not settle in and, if you are not satisfied during the first month, we refund 50% of the fee. You only pay if you hire.
