How much does a live-in housekeeper cost in Madrid?
Expect a market salary of €1,500 to €2,500/month gross, plus the employer's Social Security contributions (22.27%). In premium areas such as La Moraleja or La Finca, the most qualified profiles can reach €3,000/month. The legal minimum is the SMI: €1,424.50/month over 12 payments (€1,221 over 14). Accommodation and meals may count as salary in kind up to 30%, with at least the SMI always paid in cash.
Does a live-in housekeeper earn less because she lives in?
Not necessarily. She is paid for her work, not for living in the home. By agreement, accommodation and meals may count as salary in kind, within two limits: they cannot exceed 30% of her pay, and she must always receive at least the SMI in cash (Royal Decree 1620/2011, art. 8.2). In fact, many professionals choose live-in roles precisely because they pay more. She is entitled to 12 hours' rest between working days — which, for live-in roles, may be reduced to 10, with the difference made up over a period of up to four weeks — and to 36 consecutive hours off each week.
